Manufacturers have been dropping the ball on product labeling ever since online translators became available. Too many times I've seen packaging where it was obvious that the copywriter translated word by word instead of whole phrases, resulting in incredibly wrong grammar.

Some claim that a device can be an adapter or adaptor, but a person can only be an adapter. Fowler’s Modern Usage Guide says while such a distinction would be useful, it’s not widely observed. They go on to say that the spelling adapter is three times more common for both meanings.

(Well, it wasn’t coincidence in that I was at a huge electronics store, hence the photo, but I wasn’t actually looking for adapters and I didn’t know at the time I was going to buy a Pi.)

I flew to Finland when I was 20, and didn’t realize the adapter compatibility problem until the layover in Stockholm . Fortunately the airplane that flew me to Helsinki was a Boeing, so I could use my electric shaver before meeting my friend.

i actually have a stack of those adapters for all the traveling i dont do no mo :p

well.. other than england i dont travel to places that need an adapter no mo

(but im in england enough that i have english chargers for my stuff)

I think it just says that there is a distinction, but the line has become so blurred as no to really matter any more. I am as much of a pedantic grammarian as the next guy, but I have also given up on many linguistic crusades with the understanding that language evolves. There are even some who advocate that we get rid of the apostrophe, since context will tell the reader if it is plural or possessive.

As for me, my one peeve that I will never give up on is the Christmas carol Deck the Hall . No, it’s not Deck the Hall s . You are not decorating all the hallways in your home; you are decorating the hall, as in the house. But I know it is an utterly lost cause. Still, I always sing “ Deck the h all” because I am a unapologetic pedant.

Well, I’m just the IT guy so I’m the lone monolingual person here, but there aren’t many other places where long discussions of word etymology or the fine points of N’Ko fonts are considered work related.
